School Bus Defects Put Pennsylvania Children at Risk

When you put your child on a school bus in the morning in Western and Central Pennsylvania, you have every reason to expect that they will be safely delivered to their destination. You put your trust in the hands of the bus driver and the school district, who in turn rely on school bus manufacturers to provide safe vehicles.

Too often, though, this is not the case. As demonstrated by recent recalls, your child could be in danger because of production mistakes made by bus manufacturers.

As noted recently in  an article on Trucks.com, school bus manufacturers issued recalls for almost 2,000 vehicles for a range of problems, according to the National Traffic Safety Administration:

  • Navistar recalled nearly 900 buses, both school and commercial vehicles, because of potential problems with brake hoses that could cause the brakes to fail or increase a vehicle’s stopping distance.
  • Daimler Trucks North America recalled more than 900 school buses because potential propane leaks could result in a fire.

These numbers represent cold, hard facts. To parents of school children who ride these buses, they are a potential nightmare.

A school bus crash is a parent’s nightmare

Chaos follows any school bus accident. Emotions are running off the scale because the well-being and lives of young, vulnerable children are at stake.

Your first concern is going to be caring for your children. Their injuries could be minor, resulting in bumps, bruises and strains. They could also be more severe, causing broken bones. That means missing school and extensive physical therapy. They could be emotionally traumatized, requiring psychological therapy. At worst, your world has been devastated by the tragedy of a young life cut short.

You may be dealing with doctors, insurance companies and, most burdensome, the emotional, mental and financial aftermath of the accident. Still, you want answers. The school district is going to listen to its lawyers and provide little information. The local police may be in over their heads because they most commonly look at other factors, such as driver behavior and road conditions, rather than a mechanical defect. Should the spotlight of responsibility eventually turn to the bus manufacturer, they are going to hide behind their own lawyers and insurance companies.

What you need is someone who is going to look out for your best interests. You need someone who is going to sort out the facts and the legalities while you are busy caring for the physical and emotional needs of your injured child.
