Making Roads Safer For Older Drivers

A recent study published by TRIP found that accidents among older drivers have been steadily increasing over the years. One reason for this increase in accidents is that the number of drivers on the road who are 65 years and older jumped by about 16 percent from 2012 to 2016. However, in that time, accident fatalities in that age group rose by as much as 21 percent.

A RISE IN ACCIDENTS INVOLVING OLDER DRIVERS

While the statistics varied widely, there was a strong trend of accidents in intersections involving drivers in that age group. In 2016, 37 percent of accidents involving older drivers took place within an intersection. As we get older, it becomes more difficult to estimate the speed of an oncoming car and to determine whether or not we have enough time to make a turn.

Rocky Moretti is TRIP’s director of policy and research. He’s been examining this issue for some time. He believes that certain measures such as more adequate and larger road signs can help to reduce the number of accident fatalities involving older drivers. “The challenge is to create a roadway environment for older drivers, and really all drivers, that’s as safe as it can be,” he said, “These are cost-effective changes.”

Safer roads are better for all

With an increased number of people on the road every year, the likelihood of an accident also increases. The Pennsylvania car accident lawyers at Marcus & Mack support any measure that will make our roads safer for all citizens. Road hazards that do not have adequate signs pose a risk for all drivers, regardless of age. If larger, well-lit signs will improve road safety, than that should be a priority for lawmakers.
