Zimmer Knee Replacement Recall Attorneys
The product liability attorneys at Marcus & Mack are now reviewing potential lawsuits for people who have experienced problems after having knee replacement surgery. The Zimmer NexGen knee replacement implants have been found to have a very high rate of failure. According the research presented in March 2010 at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Zimmer NexGen knee replacement failure rate could be as high as 9% and many more people could experience loosening and pain. Many patients must undergo additional surgery or surgeries to have the implant removed and replaced.
The Company Knew Of the Problems
Since 2003, over 150,000 Zimmer NexGen knee replacements were implanted. Many people had to undergo additional surgery, while many others reported pain and loosening of the device. It appears that the manufacturer was aware of the problems with the Zimmer NexGen knee replacements, yet failed to take adequate steps to reduce the risk of injury or warn consumers. Financial compensation may be available to those who suffered due to a defective knee replacement.
Zimmer NexGen Data
The researchers from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago looked at 108 knee replacement surgeries using the Zimmer NexGen replacement knee system. They found that 9 patients required knee revision surgery due to Zimmer NexGen knee loosening and pain. They also found that 39 patients showed evidence of radiographic loosening knee implants, which were not related to specific surgeons, approaches or patient type.
The main issue is a "high-flex" porous femoral component that attaches to the bottom of the thigh bone. In most knee replacement systems, a type of surgical cement is used to hold the component in place. However, the NexGen CR-Flex does not use cement to keep it in position. Surgeons say that this may lead to a loosening of the component that requires revision surgery.
