What is NuvaRing?

NuvaRing birth control, manufactured by Organon USA, is a third generation contraceptive. Organon is part of the larger Schering-Plough Corporation. NuvaRing birth control is a flexible polyethylene ring that many women chose to use instead of the more common, birth control pill. NuvaRing is considered a combination hormonal contraceptive because it contains a combination of estrogen and progestin hormones. The hormones are released in a low steady dose directly into the bloodstream by being absorbed through the vaginal wall. NuvaRing birth control is worn for three weeks and then removed for one week. It prevents the ovaries from producing an egg. The lining of the uterus also becomes thinner inhibiting a fertilized egg from being implanted. In addition, the cervical mucous becomes thicker which helps prevent sperm from entering the uterus.

NuvaRing birth control was approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2001. It was first marketed in the United States in July 2002. NuvaRing is used by over 1.5 million women around the world. Third generation contraceptives such as NuvaRing were initially developed in the 1980's to have fewer adverse effects such as weight gain, mood alterations, and acne.

NuvaRing Warnings

NuvaRing birth control is a fairly new form of contraceptive, so there are few studies regarding its safety and effectiveness. As early as 1995 studies had shown there was an increased risk of venous thrombosis (blood clots) in contraceptives containing desogestrel compared to second generation birth control that contained other types of progestins. The FDA acknowledged this in November 1995 stating "new studies indicate about a two-fold increase in the risk of venous blood clots associated with products containing desogestrel." NuvaRing joins Yaz or Yasmine and Ocella as the latest dangerous birth control products to be investigated by law firms across the United States.
