Avandia

Important Avandia Alert

A February 20, 2010 article in the The New York Times, reported that new research ties Avandia, the Type 2 diabetes drug, to heart attacks, heart failure and strokes. Safety reviewers from the FDA are urging a recall of the drug Avandia, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. This comes after a two year congressional hearing into the safety of Avandia which alleged that GlaxoSmithKline knew the drug may cause heart problems including heart attacks and congestive heart failure several years before a medical study documented the reports.

Avandia - Type 2 diabetes

One of the most common medical problems in the United States today is diabetes. Given the market's needs, billions of dollars have been spent on research in an attempt to prevent, cure or otherwise control this condition. One of the most promising medications to hit the market in recent years was Avandia, offered by GlaxoSmithKline.

Avandia is known as rosiglitazone and was linked to 304 deaths during the third quarter of 2009. It was reported that there may be as many as 300 cases of heart failure and 500 heart attacks every month in Avandia users. *Consult a Physician before discontinuing the use of any medication

FDA Recommends that Avandia be withdrawn

The February 20, 2010 article in The New York Times quotes Dr. David Graham and Dr. Kate Gelperin of the Food and Drug Administration as reporting "Rosiglitazone should be removed from the market." It also reports an internal battle in the FDA about the safety of Avandia. A new Senate investigation concluded that GlaxoSmithKline should have warned patients earlier of the potential risks of Avandia or Rosiglitazone.

What heart problems have been linked to Avandia?

Avandia may be linked to some of the following major health risks and cardiovascular events leading to death:
